DOLLY THE SHEEP IS PUT TO DEATH
Scientists who cloned Dolly the sheep made 276 attempts before they were successful. Very few cloned animal embryos survive implantation and even fewer make it to birth. Every cloned animal born to date has suffered from side effects. On February 14, 6-year-old Dolly was euthanized after being diagnosed with progressive lung disease. While the lifespan for sheep is about 12 years, cells in Dolly's body began showing wear typical of older animals after only 3 years. Human beings should not be subjected to such defect and destruction. Would "imperfect" human clones be euthanized like Dolly? To subject human lives to such experimentation is immoral and unethical.
A COMPLETE CLONING BAN IS THE ONLY WAY
Some people assert there are two kinds of cloning: reproductive cloning and experimental cloning (also called research or therapeutic cloning). However, both forms of cloning start with the same process called "nuclear transplantation" or "somatic cell nuclear transfer" to create an embryo of about 150 cells. Because the cloning process is the same, the Justice Department testified that permitting cloning only for experimentation is unenforceable; only a complete human cloning ban will work. While largely ignoring the advances in adult stem cell and other ethical research, biotech companies are lobbying to legalize experimental human cloning.
Rep. Dave Weldon (R-FL) and Sen. Sam Brownback (R-KS) are leading the effort in Congress. They need your help to pass the bill to ban human cloning!
Urge your Representative to vote
for the Human Cloning Prohibition Act of 2003 and to reject any clone-and-kill substitute that permits so-called research cloning.
