Unborn Victims passed 61-38 and both amendments failed: Feinstein 49-50 and Murray 46-53.

JUSTICE FOR INNOCENT CRIME VICTIMS Urge Your Senator to vote 'YES' on the Unborn Victims of Violence Act   Printer Friendly version   E-mail to a Friend On Thursday, March 25, the Senate will vote on the House-passed Unborn Victims of Violence Act (H.R. 1997), also known as "Laci and Connor's Law," which would punish criminals who hurt or kill an unborn child during the commission of a federal crime against a pregnant woman. The House passed this legislation by a vote of 254-163 in February and because the Senate is voting on that exact bill, it will go straight to the President's desk, if passed in original form. Why Should Congress Pass the Unborn Victims of Violence Act? We've all heard the tragic story of the murder of Laci Peterson and her unborn son, Connor. Laci's family has supported the Unborn Victims bill as a way to recognize the grief they feel for losing two family members, not just one. They write: "Knowing that perpetrators who murder pregnant women will pay the price not only for the loss of the mother, but the baby as well, will help bring justice for these victims and hopefully act as a deterrent to those considering heinous acts." H.R. 1997 would hold criminals accountable for crimes committed against every "member of the species homo sapiens, at any stage of development, who is carried in the womb." The bill does not cover abortion or acts committed by a woman on her own unborn child. The bill would not create any new federal crimes but rather recognizes that unborn children may be victims of violent crimes already covered by 68 existing federal laws. OPPPOSE ALL AMENDMENTS Two senators are offering unrelated and phony amendments to keep this important piece of legislation from the president's desk. All amendments must be opposed to avoid a conference committee. Murray Amendment — would attach a massive 158 page unrelated domestic violence provision to Laci and Conner's law, essentially killing the bill by setting it up for a filibuster. Feinstein One-Victim Substitute — would recognize only one victim (the mother) instead of two, in a crime resulting in the deaths of a pregnant woman and her unborn baby (Supported by pro-abortion groups). ACTION ITEM Tell your Senators to vote 'YES' on the Unborn Victims of Violence Act. Reaching the Members on the target list is especially important: Spector (R-PA), Bill Nelson (D-FL), Johnson (D-SD), Byrd (D-WV), Daschle (D-SD), Murkowski (R-AK), Landrieu (D-LA), Warner (R-VA), Biden (D-DE), Bayh (D-IN), Dayton (D-MN), Hollings (D-SC), Collins (R-ME), Chafee (R-RI), Campbell (R-CO) and Pryor (D-AR) Tell your Senators to vote 'NO' on all amendments, sending Laci and Conner's Law IMMEDIATELY to the President's desk! This important piece of legislation must be passed to protect the lives of women and their unborn babies. This bill would punish criminals who hurt or kill an unborn child during the commission of a federal crime against a pregnant woman. Please vote NO on all amendments including the Murray Amendment, which attaches massive unrelated domestic violence provisions to the bill, and the Feinstein One-Victim Substitute, which recognizes only one victim in the death of a mother and her baby.
