UPDATE: The Senate passed the Inhofe Amendment by a vote of 62-35 (Roll Call vote 131), thereby adopting English as our official language. However, the Senate also passed a watered down substitute amendment offered by Sen. Ken Salazar 58-39 (Roll Call Vote 132). This amendment only states that English is our “common and unifying language.” The two versions will be debated during a conference committee on the larger immigration bill. Eagle Forum supports the Inhofe Amendment.

Senate Continues Push for Amnesty! Urge your Senators to vote FOR the Inhofe English Amendment and AGAINST Amnesty!! Click here The United States Senate continues to amend and debate the Hagel-Martinez Comprehensive Immigration Reform Act (S. 2611), which provides amnesty for millions of illegal aliens and potentially triples legal immigration over the next twenty years, according to a Heritage Foundation study. The following amendments were voted on yesterday (this is not a complete list): Isakson Amendment #3961 — delays implementation of any amnesty/guest-worker program until the border security provisions of the bill are fully completed and operation. AMENDMENT FAILED 40-55 (Roll Call Vote 121) Kyl Amendment #4027 — denies adjustment of legal status (amnesty) to illegal aliens who have been convicted of a felony, three misdemeanors, or who have been ordered removed from the United States under other circumstances. AMENDMENT PASSED 99-0 (Roll Call Vote 125) Sessions Amendment #3979 — orders construction of 370 miles of border fencing and 500 miles of vehicle barriers along the southern border. AMENDMENT PASSED 83-16 (Roll Call Vote 126) Vitter Amendment # 3963 — removes provisions allowing citizenship for illegal aliens who have been in the U.S. more than two years. AMENDMENT FAILED 33-66 (Roll Call Vote 127) Cornyn Amendment #3965 — requires guest-workers have an employer sponsor their petition for a green card, or legal residence. AMENDMENT PASSED 50-48 (Roll Call Vote 128) Kennedy Amendment #4066 — repeals Cornyn amendment and allows guest-workers to "self-petition" for a green card. AMENDMENT PASSED 56-43 (Roll Call Vote 129) IMPORTANT AMENDMENT TO BE VOTED ON TODAY: Inhofe Amendment — establishes English as the official language of the United States. Call your Senators and urge them to vote FOR the Inhofe Amendment! A vote on final passage of the Hagel-Martinez amnesty bill will likely occur next week!
