NO MEANS NO, MR. PRESIDENT!
Tell your Senators to stand strong against White House pressure on amnesty!!
“I’ll see you at the bill signing.”
~President Bush speaking on his plan to resurrect the immigration bill 6/11/07 Because of your great work over the past few weeks convincing your Senators that the Kyl-Kennedy amnesty bill was bad news for America, the bill failed last Thursday on a cloture vote of 45-50 (15 votes short of 60 needed to pass it). This was a monumental victory fueled by your calls, demonstrations at local Senate offices, and word of mouth exposure of the failings of the bill. Everyone got the message that this was a bad bill, except President Bush. He will spend Tuesday afternoon in a meeting with Republican Senators trying to get them to change their vote on the bill. In fact, it seems that the entire Bush administration is committed to ignoring the voice of the American people. Below are quotes taken from a White House publication “In Case You Missed It.”
The clear message from the White House is that they will stop at nothing to circumvent the will of the American people. They put forth a false choice—either you support this bill (amnesty) or you get nothing—no enforcement of current law. It is the constitutional duty of the Executive Branch to enforce the law. Holding enforcement of those laws hostage weakens our country and increases the public distrust of the federal government on immigration. Fire up your phone, email and fax network again! We need your calls all day today and tomorrow to send the message that the amnesty bill is dead! Call the White House and your Senators and tell them that "No Means No!”
President Bush is going to Capitol Hill on Tuesday to make deals to change Senators’ votes on the immigration bill. What kind of tactics will be used to gain their votes? Will there be threats of a loss of campaign funds? Tell your Senators, they serve the people, not the President. Remember the giveaway of the Panama Canal, when so many Senators were defeated after voting for it. Call your Senators and the White House and tell them “No Means No!!”
