The National Education Association (NEA) adopted its pro-abortion policy in 1985, amended it in 1986, and affirmed it every year thereafter. NEA Resolution I-13 on Family Planning states:
"The National Education Association supports family planning, including the right to reproductive freedom.
"The Association urges the government to give high priority to making available all methods of family planning to women and men unable to take advantage of private facilities.
"The Association further urges the implementation of community-operated, school-based family planning clinics that will provide intensive counseling by trained personnel."
In response to the NEA going on record in favor of abortion, in October 1994 a group of pro-life educators and concerned citizens formed an organization called Teachers Saving Children (TSC) with the primary purpose of convincing the NEA either to change its position or to be silent on the issue. Teachers (and parents) were also dissatisfied with the NEA's advocacy of explicit sex education because it has resulted in greater numbers of teenage pregnancies and abortions.
Teachers Saving Children seeks to establish among professional educators' organizations a respect for all human life from conception to natural death. TSC members are active in alerting NEA members and the public through press articles, editorials, and letter-writing campaigns and in working to change the climate of opinion to be more favorable to life.
TSC Executive Director Connie Bancroft says, "It is the height of foolishness for professional educators' associations to condone or support a practice [abortion] which eliminates the very people that our profession is supposed to serve. They must cease taking controversial political stands, especially on non-education issues, without a clear mandate from their members. Now is the time to get involved in saving the lives of pre-born students."
TSC is open to all pro-life, pro-family educators and concerned citizens, and membership in a professional educator's organization is not required. For membership information, write TSC Inc., P.O. Box 125, Damascus, OH 44619-0125.
