American Dictionary of the English Language, by Noah Webster, 1828, Facsimile First Edition, 1995, Foundation for American Christian Education - Publishers, San Francisco, CA, $67.20, cloth.

The Foundation for American Christian Education has republished Noah Webster's original 1828 American Dictionary of the English Language in a facsimile edition. This beautiful book contains a 27-page biography, "Noah Webster, Founding Father of American Christian Scholarship and Education," by Rosalie June Slater; Noah Webster's dissertation, "Origin, History, and Connection of the Languages of Western Asia and Europe"; and Noah Webster's "Concise Grammar of the English Language."

Noah Webster, the Father of American Christian education, wrote the first American dictionary and established a system of rules to govern spelling, grammar, and reading. This master linguist understood the power of words, their definitions, and the need for precise word usage in communication to maintain independence. Webster used the Bible as the foundation for his definitions. Our nation's Christian heritage and the Christian philosophy of life, government, and education are reflected throughout the pages of his 1828 dictionary.

Consider the contrast between the modern dictionary definition of "education" and the 1828 Webster definition. The modern dictionary definition of "education" is the action or process of educating or of being educated; a stage of such a process; the field of study that deals mainly with methods of teaching and learning in schools. Whereas, Webster's 1828 definition of "education" is the bringing up, as of a child; instruction; formation of manners. Education comprehends all that series of instruction and discipline, which is intended to enlighten the understanding, correct the temper, and form the manners and habits of youth, and fit them for usefulness in their future stations; to give children a good education in manners, arts and science, is important; to give them a religious education is indispensable; and an immense responsibility rests on parents and guardians who neglect these duties.

The dictionary plays an important role in the intellectual growth of a family. It teaches either a secular or a Christian world view through word definitions that establish the system of values by which the family lives.

This standard reference tool will greatly assist students of all ages in their studies. The Noah Webster 1828 Dictionary may be ordered by calling 1-800-352-3223.
