During a meeting of the Democratic Caucus, the NEA's Manager of Political Affairs, Jack Pacheco, told members that the union is now working on the 2002 elections, and will use what it learned in 2000 to improve its record of electing Democratic candidates. He reminded his audience that there will be an open seat for Sen. Strom Thurmond and, in reference to contributions to the NEA Fund for Children and Public Education, added: "It's time to get Jesse Helms. You give us the money and we'll go after Jesse."
