Note: The words "entangling alliances" are often attributed to Washington (as witness the title of Alexander de Conde's book on the foreign policy of Washington's administration) but in fact it was Thomas Jefferson who declared in his inaugural address his committment to "peace, commerce, and honest friendship with all nations, entangling alliances with none."
