Republican Texas Gov. Rick Perry set off a nationwide firestorm by issuing an executive order mandating that by the fall of 2008, all sixth-grade girls in his state be given the new Merck Gardasil vaccine for human papillomavirus (HPV), which was developed to prevent some cervical cancers.
