Tell the Senate: Leave Hobby Lobby Alone!

July 14, 2014

Hobby LobbyThe Supreme Court’s decision in Hobby Lobby v. Burwell was an important victory for conservatives, but liberals wasted no time in continuing their wage war on religious freedom. Senators Patty Murray (D-WA) and Mark Udall (D-CO) have sponsored S. 2578, a bill that would overturn the Supreme Court’s ruling. We expect Reid to file cloture today on this bill, meaning that a cloture vote could occur as early as Wednesday morning. You may recall that the court affirmed the rights of Hobby Lobby and other family-run businesses with religious objections to opt out of the Obama administration’s contraception mandate, which includes abortion-inducing drugs. The Court found that the mandate violated the Religious Freedom Restoration Act (RFRA), which was sponsored by then-Representative Charles Schumer and Senator Ted Kennedy, passed the Democratic-controlled Congress overwhelmingly, and was signed into law by President Bill Clinton in 1993.

S. 2578 would undo RFRA’s protections, requiring employers to purchase contraception whatever their religious beliefs. The bill offered by Murray and Udall is shameless pandering to radical feminists at the expense of religious liberties long cherished by Americans. Not only would it force family-run businesses to violate their consciences, but the law does not even make exceptions for religious entities. While the HHS mandate was an affront to religious liberty, by expanding the mandate’s scope and enshrining it as a statute, S. 2578 is even more dangerous.

Take Action! (This alert requires no further action at this time.)

The Left must not be allowed to take away protections for religious liberty. Please call or email your senators and urge them to vote against S. 2578. In particular, focus on the following members of the Senate Democratic caucus who have not cosponsored the bill:

Thomas Carper – (202) 224-2441

Bob Casey – (202) 224-6324

Joe Donnelly – (202) 224-4814

Heidi Heitkamp – (202) 224-2043

Angus King – (202) 224-5344

Mary Landrieu – (202) 224-5824

Joe Manchin – (202) 224-3954

Claire McCaskill – (202) 224-6154

Bill Nelson – (202) 224-5274

Suggested message to send to your U.S. Senators:

We urge you to vote against S. 2578, which would undo the Supreme Court’s ruling in Burwell v. Hobby Lobby. The Hobby Lobby decision reaffirmed the religious freedoms of Americans, and the Senate should not vote to take them away.

S. 2578 pretends to be about women’s health, but it is instead a radical infringement on freedom of worship. It would force many Americans to choose between their business and their conscience. When the government tells citizens which religious beliefs they may or may not practice, it is hard to see what government cannot compel people to do.

Religious freedom is one of our country’s cornerstones. Please protect it by opposing S. 2578.
