Phyllis Schlafly Columns – 2012

Phyllis Schlafly Columns – 2012

North Korea’s Wakeup Call
It should have been a loud wakeup call in December when North Korea successfully launched a three-stage rocket delivering a payload in orbit around the globe. This event established North Korea’s credentials as having intercontinental ballistic missile technology. 12-26-12

The UN Wants to Tax Us, Too
While President Obama and Speaker John Boehner are wrestling with whether or not they will agree to raise taxes, United Nations delegates partying in Doha, Qatar are planning to impose a new kind of tax on Americans. UN conferees have been discussing how they can start a global tax that would hit Americans hard. 12-19-12

Atheist Attacks on Christmas
Bill O’Reilly asked this question on his Fox News program last week: “Why do I have to be the leader defending Christmas against its attackers?” O’Reilly was criticizing Rhode Island Governor Lincoln Chafee’s renaming his state’s Christmas tree a “holiday tree.” 12-12-12

ObamaCare is Not a Sure Thing
Those who thought ObamaCare was set in concrete by Chief Justice John Roberts’ decision last June are in for a shock. December 14 is the new deadline (extended from November 16) for states to let the feds know, yea or nay, whether or not they will be setting up a health insurance exchange, which is the key to participating in the misnamed Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act. 12-05-12

Amnesty Won’t Elect Republicans
The Republican strategists who confidently predicted that their candidate, Mitt Romney, would win the 2012 election are already pontificating about what Republicans must do to win in 2016. After their disastrous defeat, strategy and policy mistakes, and expensive super PAC advertising that failed to win votes, why should anybody take their advice again? 11-28-12

Political Parties Need Rebranding
Dozens of explanations have been offered by people who think they are savvy about politics to explain why Mitt Romney lost and Barack Obama was reelected despite his many unlawful actions and the high unemployment figures. I toss into the mix my view that the two major political parties need rebranding. 11-21-12

Try Bipartisanship About China
We heard a lot of loose talk during the presidential campaign about getting tough with Communist China. Since both Barack Obama and Mitt Romney criticized China’s violations of free-trade rules that the United States obeys, this would be the perfect issue to showcase the bipartisanship to which both men said they are committed. 11-14-12

Beware of the Lame Duck Session
The current Congress hasn’t finished its mischief. It still has the opportunity to do bad things in the upcoming Lame Duck session, a period when members of Congress who are already defeated will have the opportunity to vote without concern for voter approval. 11-07-12

Taking the Right Fork in the Road
Americans may be tired of an exhausting national campaign, but let’s not forget that the stakes have never been higher. As Yogi Berra said, When you come to a fork in the road, take it. 10-31-12

An October Surprise
Political pundits have been warning about an October Surprise that could affect the outcome of the presidential election. But this year’s October Surprise may have been the 9/11 murder of U.S. Ambassador Christopher Stevens plus three other Americans, and President Obama’s deceitful, cowardly response.10-24-12

Don’t Let Your Vote Be Canceled by Fraud
As we approach a major national election, we hear warnings about many kinds of vote fraud and possible recounts that might delay confirmation of who are the victors. We also hear from deniers who insist that vote fraud is a figment of the imagination of Republicans. It isn’t; vote fraud is real. 10-17-12

Like ObamaCare, Obama Core Is Another Power Grab
When we list the areas that Barack Obama wants to “fundamentally transform” as he promised before his 2008 election, let’s not overlook his plans for education. They are as fundamentally transformational, costly and dictatorial as ObamaCare. 10-10-12

The Election May Be Decided Before November 6
The presidential debates start October 3 and extend to October 22. But who wins or scores in the debates will have no influence on tens of thousands of Americans who will have already cast their votes for President and are not permitted to change their minds. 10-03-12

Bad Facts about Obama’s Prospects
Although the polls show the presidential campaigns neck and neck, the facts continue to look negative for Barack Obama. Two-thirds of the American people say they believe the United States is going in the wrong direction, and changing the occupant of the White House is the only way to reverse course. 9-26-12

The Significance of Party Platforms
House Speaker John Boehner was quoted during the Republican National Convention as saying, “Have you ever met anybody who read the Party platform? I never met anybody.” 9-19-12

Democrats Have No Plan to Create Jobs
The bounce expected from Barack Obama’s Democratic Convention speech collapsed the following day under the reality check that the current unemployment figure is 8.1 percent. And 40.7 percent of those have been out of work for 27 weeks or more. 9-12-12

Labor Day Reminds Us of the Need for Jobs
The businesses that support and lobby for so-called free trade are always trying to wrap themselves in Ronald Reagan. But that’s false because Reagan would not have allowed America to be cheated coming and going by foreign countries. 9-03-12

Good and Bad Immigration Proposals
After a genuinely grassroots Republican platform committee produced a principled document on a plethora of issues, including immigration, some people who were not part of the process are promoting pro-amnesty proposals. 8-29-12

How the Government Breaks Up Marriages
A very public marital melodrama is now playing in San Francisco. It shows the idiocy of domestic violence laws and the extremism of the feminists whose ideology paints men as innate batterers and women as victims of the patriarchy. 8-22-12

Why Did Ted Cruz Win the Texas Primary?
To the surprise of the pundits, pollsters and predictors who think they are smarter than the rest of us, Ted Cruz won the nomination for U.S. Senator from Texas. A few months ago, he rated only 2 percent in the polls, but in the Primary Runoff he coasted to a 14-point win. 8-15-12

Obama Sabotages Welfare Reform
President Obama on July 12 ended welfare reform, the crowning achievement of the Republican Congress of 1996. That reform succeeded in reducing the welfare rolls by almost half, and was so popular with the American people that Bill Clinton felt compelled to sign it. 8-08-12

The NEA Shows Its Politics
Political conversation on the media is full of chatter about how to cut spending and debt, but it reminds us of the comment attributed to Mark Twain: Everybody talks about the weather but nobody does anything about it. There’s a lot of talk about how to cut back on entitlements, but why doesn’t somebody suggest cutting the extravagant federal dollars spent on education, which is not even an entitlement? 8-01-12

UN Treaty Mischief on Disabilities
The United Nations in collusion with Obama’s globalists have cooked up another scheme to slice off a piece of U.S. sovereignty and put us under global government. The plan is to stampede the Senate into ratifying the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (CRPD). 7-25-12

Let’s Talk About Outsourcing
Among President Obama’s disingenuous promises made over his four years, he said he would focus on creating “jobs that pay well and can’t be outsourced.” Yet he spent billions of U.S. taxpayer’s money overseas to create outsourced jobs. 7-18-12

One Nation Under Government — Not Under God
When Barack Obama promised to “fundamentally transform the United States” we could not have anticipated the extreme transformations he would seek. The evidence is rolling in that he is determined to transform America into a totally secular land where religion is permitted only within the walls of a church, but is banned in every public place, public gathering and public school. 7-11-12

Obama Censors the Declaration of Independence
Who does President Barack Obama think he is that he can change the wording of the Declaration of Independence? Again and again he presumes to quote the great Declaration while making a significant change: he omits the word “Creator.” 7-04-12

Grassley Asks the Right Questions
Senator Chuck Grassley (R-IA), a good friend of the Constitution and We the People, has sent President Obama a powerful letter co-signed by 20 Senators. The letter spells out many unlawful aspects of Obama’s recent announcement that he will not enforce U.S. laws against young illegal aliens and will reward their illegal status with residency and work permits. 6-27-12

The Dream Act Is a Nightmare
“Mr. President, why do you favor foreign workers over Americans?” That was the obvious question Barack Obama refused to answer when a reporter, doing his job, sought an answer rather than a canned teleprompter presentation. 6-20-12

Terminate the Racket of College Loans
One of the ways to cut the big-spending binge engaged in by the federal government is to terminate the racket of college loans. It’s counterproductive, discriminatory, and a bad investment for both taxpayers and students. 6-13-12

Obama Lunges Toward Global Government
One of the biggest issues in the November election is whether we will continue or stop President Obama’s move toward restricting U.S. sovereignty and rushing down the road to global governance. One would think that the obvious failure of the European Union and disdain for the euro would put the skids on global integration, but no such luck. 6-06-12

It’s None of The Government’s Business
What is it about bureaucrats and school personnel that they want to pry into the personal life and habits of American citizens of every age? There seems to be no end to the imperial demands by government and schools to require both grownups and kids to reveal personal information. 5-30-12

Buy American To Eat Safe
The globalists and the lobbyists are lining up to promote another so-called free-trade agreement that gives favors to foreigners while discriminating against American products, jobs and consumers. The Mainstream Media are allowing the deal, called the Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP), to be negotiated in typically secretive closed-door sessions. 5-23-12

Defeat Law of the Sea Treaty — Again
The stunning repudiation of Senator Richard Lugar’s (R-IN) bid for a seventh term has sent shock waves through Washington’s internationalist lobby. A former Rhodes Scholar, Lugar has spent his career promoting a globalist agenda since he succeeded the late Jesse Helms as the top Republican on the Senate Foreign Relations Committee. 5-16-12

Steve King Stands Up to the “War Against Women”
The abortion industry racks up profits by dumping expensive complications of its procedures on hospitals, legitimate physicians, and the public. Many abortionists lack staff privileges at local hospitals, so when women having abortion complications go to an emergency room, the enormous costs are shifted to others. 5-09-12

Obama Is a Big-Time Law Violator
Where is the Mainstream Media’s coverage of the shocking “Memo” issued by nine State Attorneys General (AG) detailing 21 specific violations of law by the Obama Administration? That’s too many violations to list in this column, but here are some of the more outrageous examples of what the AGs call “violations of law” by “an increasingly overreaching federal government.” 5-02-12

Obama Bogged Down by Scandals
Increasing public disapproval of Barack Obama is based not only on his extravagant spending that hangs debt like an albatross around the necks of our children and grandchildren. He is presiding over the most scandal-ridden administration in decades, from Colombia to Las Vegas, to the Mexican border, to Solyndra, and more. 4-25-12

Obama’s War on Women
Hilary Rosen’s attack on Mrs. Ann Romney by saying that (although she raised five children) she “never worked a day in her life” perfectly fits the definition of a gaffe. A gaffe is a statement that reveals what the spokesperson really thinks but turns out to be embarrassing when it is publicly discussed. 4-18-12

Look What’s Going On in Charter Schools
The charter school movement was presented to the American people as a way to have more parental control of public school education. Charter schools are public schools financed by local taxpayers plus federal grants. 4-11-12

Islamic Indoctrination in Textbooks
Political Correctness has a double standard when it comes to teaching about religion in public schools. Drop Christianity down the Memory Hole, but give extensive and mostly favorable coverage to Islam. 4-04-12

Spying and Stealing by Communist China
How long are we going to put up with the fiction that free trade with China is beneficial to the United States? China uses our myopia about free trade to cheat us coming and going, steal our patents and manufacturing secrets, and violate the rules of the World Trade Organization to which they agreed when they joined. 3-28-12

H-1B Visas Take American Jobs
When President Obama was participating in a live video chat, Jennifer Wedel asked him, “Why does the government continue to issue and extend H-1B visas when there are tons of Americans just like my husband with no job?” Her husband is a semiconductor engineer laid off three years ago and still unable to find an engineering job. 3-21-12

We Can’t Separate Social Policy from Tax Law
Contrary to foolish meanderings of politicians, social issues are not only an integral feature of our fiscal policies but also specifically of our tax laws. 3-14-12

Phony Divide Between Fiscal & Social Issues
Contrary to politicians who want to call a truce about social issues, there is absolutely no way to separate social and fiscal issues; they are locked in a tight political embrace. Politicians who say we can ignore social issues, or avoid talking about them, are really saying that they have no plan to cut federal spending and the growing national debt. 3-07-12

Ginsburg Likes Use of Foreign Law
Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg has proved again why she doesn’t belong on the U.S. Supreme Court. She really doesn’t like our U.S. Constitution, which she swore to uphold and defend, and she probably would like to rewrite it with input from various foreign laws and constitutions. 2-29-12

Obama’s War on Religious Liberty
Welcome to the real ObamaCare, whereby a handful of leftists in D.C. impose the views of their big-money donors on more than 300 million Americans. If the Obama mandate for contraception remains intact, then liberals will next demand that Americans pay for other objectionable items that are not really medical care. 2-22-12

Obama Obeys the Feminists Again
Proclaiming in a New York Times headline that “Obama Adjusts a Rule Covering Contraceptives,” the pro-Obama media tried to dig the President out of the political hole he had jumped into. But calling Obama’s revised rule an “adjustment” or an “accommodation” or other soft-sell word can’t cover the fact that the revision is essentially the same as the original rule. 2-15-12

Day of Reckoning for Violence Against Women Act
The reauthorization of the Violence Against Women Act (VAWA) passed out of the Senate Judiciary Committee on February 2 on a straight party-line vote. That proves again that the feminists control the Democratic Party, and also is a refreshing indication that Republicans are no longer intimidated by feminist demands. 2-08-12

Jan Brewer’s photo with Obama
The now-famous picture of Arizona Governor Jan Brewer shaking her finger at President Barack Obama is both appropriate and deserved. In America, we don’t have rulers entitled to the deference and obsequiousness other countries show to their kings; our elected officials are ordinary citizens whom we are free to criticize. 2-01-12

Unconstitutional Recess Appointments
Barack Obama’s latest unconstitutional action is his attempt to make four so-called recess appointments to high-level, well-paying jobs in the federal bureaucracy when the Senate was NOT in recess. He appointed three people to the National Labor Relations Board (NLRB), plus Richard Cordray to head the newly created Consumer Financial Protection Bureau even though the Senate had declined to confirm his nomination. 1-25-12

We Need Pro-Family Tax Policies
Why did Senator Rick Santorum suddenly surge to the status of a leading candidate for the Republican nomination for President after having been treated like a not-to-be-taken-seriously contender in the many television debates? It’s not only because a significant segment of conservatives voted by a super majority to back him at a meeting in Houston last week. 1-18-12

Bailing out the European Union
It was bad enough when President Obama bamboozled Congress into passing a Stimulus bill that didn’t produce any jobs, then increased the federal deficit in the 2012 omnibus spending bill, then raised the debt ceiling, then bailed out the big U.S. banks, then tried to bail out his pal Solyndra to try to save it from bankruptcy, and then appointed a Jobs Czar who creates jobs only in China. But it’s over the top when Obama told the European Council President and the European Commission President that “the United States stands ready to do our part” to bail out Europe.

Obama Gives Gambling a Christmas Present
Just before sneaking off to Hawaii where he barred news photos on the golf course, President Obama overturned longstanding U.S. policy that prohibited internet gambling. In yet another presidential shenanigan that bypasses U.S. law, Obama used the device of a secret Justice Department Office of Legal Counsel opinion, dated in September and quietly released to the public on Christmas Eve.
