Obama Fails Geography

Not-the-Gulf-colorApparently President Obama’s geography knowledge is not as good as it should be. He’s made several errors of late, but the most glaring happened on the Tonight Show. Obama said: “If we don’t deepen our ports all along the Gulf — places like Charleston, South Carolina, or Savannah, Georgia, or Jacksonville, Florida — if we don’t do that, these ships are going to go someplace else and we’ll lose jobs.”

Charleston, Savannah, and Jacksonville are not located on the Gulf of Mexico. The chief executive’s geographical misstep is troubling, but the move by the Associated Press to cover up his mistake is downright frightening.

The Associated Press (AP) has admitted inserting text into the Obama quote in an effort to cover his error. The AP inserted an “interpretive phrase” making Obama’s quote confusing, but no longer technically wrong: “If we don’t deepen our ports all along the Gulf — (and in) places like Charleston, South Carolina, or Savannah, Georgia, or Jacksonville, Florida — if we don’t do that, these ships are going to go someplace else and we’ll lose jobs.”

The AP has not offered an apology for adding text. Some may wonder why the AP felt the need to help out the President.
