Dr. Gary Scott, Senior Research Fellow in Civic Literacy at the Intercollegiate Studies Institute, joined Phyllis on the March 24 program to talk about the general lack of civics education, especially at top-ranked universities.
Dr. Scott’s group put together a test with questions gathered from top history professors around the country. These questions dealt with basic knowledge about historic events, American government, and economic principles. Dr. Scott said that unfortunately, the results were more discouraging than he expected.
The research project involved giving this test to both freshmen and graduating seniors at fifty colleges across the country. Twenty-five were specially chosen because of their high U.S. News & World Report rankings, having a Christian/conservative bent, or because researchers wanted schools from several regions of the country. The other half were chosen completely at random.
Perhaps the most disturbing finding he pointed out is that “prestige does not pay off”. The higher-ranked colleges had students that scored lower on the tests. In fact, the freshmen of these schools often scored higher than the seniors, indicating there was negative learning!
Dr. Scott encourages parents who are evaluating colleges to find out what the mission statement is for each school. Are teachers aiming to create better citizens and how do they go about doing this?
