Phyllis discussed Freedom-nomics, an interesting book by Dr. John Lott, with its author during the October 13 program. Dr. Lott received his Ph.D. in Economics from UCLA and has published over 90 articles in academic journals.
Dr. Lott and Phyllis talked mostly about how economics relates to abortion, education, and gun control. He wrote this book to counteract the liberal-leaning Freakonomics, which among other claims, states that legalized abortion decreases crime rates.
In regards to abortion, Dr. Lott explained that the original research made some empirical mistakes, and that actually the findings showed an increase in violent crime in recent years.
The guest also talked about economics and education, both how economics is taught in the schools and how the marketplace can be introduced into the public schools through the voucher system. Dr. Lott lamented that the schools are failing urban families the most, and that these parents are increasingly supporting vouchers as a way to improve their child’s education.
Having already written an entire book devoted to guns and crime, Dr. Lott has updated that publication with a chapter in this book, and he explained that concealed carry makes it easier for people to stop bad things from happening. In fact, he cited that guns are used 4 or 5 times more often defensively (people protecting themselves from crime) than offensively (to commit a crime).
