Karen Braun, writer of the "Spunky Homeschool" weblog, joined Phyllis for the February 2 edition of Eagle Forum Live to discuss her experiences as a homeschooling mother.
Karen said she has had to fight many barriers: economic ones, of course, but also psychological ones. She was "raised to be a career woman" and never learned how to balance a household. Also, though home-schooling is technically legal in every state, many state governments have "education reforms" that make homeschooling less desirable for parents.
When asked why she decided to homeschool her children, Karen admitted that having a degree in Computer Science, it was very tempting to work and earn a six-figure income. However, she feels that she is called by God to direct her children's discipleship and education as a U.S. citizen and as a Christian. She seeks to raise intelligent, politically involved citizens.
Karen encouraged both those parents who homeschool and those who choose to send their children to public schools that they need to fight school officials who make them feel "inadequate, inferior, intimidated": "God will give you the confidence...it's not just the truth" that the school knows more about your children than you do because God ordained parents to be in charge of children's education and upbringing. Karen believes that the public schools can follow this model if parents are put back in charge of finances and curriculum as they were when the public education system was first founded.
