The Battleground for Freedom
Professor Allen Quist explained that the public schools are a battleground on the December 8 program. The political science teacher at Bethany Lutheran College in Minnesota has written a book about the situation called America’s Schools: the Battleground for Freedom.
The first topic Phyllis and the guest discussed was education “reform,” and Phyllis explained that it always makes her suspicious. Prof. Quist echoed that sentiment, telling listeners to “look out” whenever they hear of a so-called “education reform.” Many teachers do not like the newest proposal, No Child Left Behind; it is a pet project for the federal government because it would have more control over all schools.
The government argues that some states’ standards are too low and that a curriculum written by the federal government would be an improvement. Prof. Quist explained this “improvement” means an increase in students’ learning a liberal ideology and the President being able to dictate what the standards are. This can lead to methods such as teaching a particular worldview and following UN, rather than U.S., standards.
An example of federal curriculum is found in the textbook called We the People: The Citizen and the Constitution. You can find Prof. Quist’s review on the EdWatch website, as well as many other interesting articles. In this book, the Bill of Rights is portrayed as an outdated document, and some amendments, such as the second (bearing arms) go unmentioned.
