Tim Flatt, the Director of the National Christian Homeschool Basketball Championships, talked with Phyllis during the August 18
program to discuss the importance of sports.
Mr. Flatt has coached basketball teams for the last 12 years, and his teams included his four homeschooled sons, who
are now all grown adults. The tournament hosts hundreds of teams from around the country from ages 8 to 18. The tournament
has separate competitions for boys and girls teams.
The tournament has gained some national attention lately, and was profiled positively in the New York Times. The event not only
gives awards for the top teams from each gender in 10 age brackets, but also has an all-American game with the top players that was so popular, they "had
to turn [spectators] away".
One caller's children have participated in the tournament before, and he commended Tim for how well-run the program is and how enjoyable the experience
was for his children. Phyllis suggested the caller also join Eagle Forum to help us fight for homeschooling rights in his state.
The discussion also involved homeschoolers in all sports. For example, Tim Tebow, last year's college football Heisman Trophy award winner, was a homeschool
student. Tim explained that even noncompetitive athletes will build a good foundation to succeed in any area, from business to science to teaching.
