College Student Rights
Phyllis talked with Greg Lukianoff, the President of FIRE, on the January 17 program about his organization's Guide to Free Speech on Campus . Greg noted that FIRE currently employs a full-time lawyer who just looks at campus speech codes.
The guest explained that university administrators are often motivated to write these codes by trying to keep the peace among students. However, FIRE has
filed 11 lawsuits against such codes, "and every single one of them has been successful." Lukianoff's main point was that students should be aware of
their rights. On a public university campus, "you have full 1st Amendment rights." Private universities are not subject to these guidelines, but "FIRE believes
that universities should be held to their promises." Many universities advertise, raise funds, and attract bright students by promising free expression on
their campus.
Phyllis pointed out that "the speech code gestapo even goes after the people who use a hateful word only saying it's a bad word," and the guest agreed:
"It's been a major theme." Greg explained that university administrators have a very strong assumption that "everyone is secretly a raging racist . . . it's gotten that out of control."
When asked about how many schools protect free speech, the guest laughed and said there are only eight colleges the organization has noted.
If you would like to find out more information about FIRE, including how to submit a student's case, visit their website at www.thefire.org or call them at 215-717-FIRE (215-717-3473).
