The "Hooking-Up" Culture

Phyllis talked with Sarah Howell on the November 3 program about the pain many women feel in post-modern dating relationships. Sarah feels she has a special calling to minister to women, and has most recently written a book called Ephesians: Finding True Love.

Phyllis asked the guest what it's like for a young woman to leave home and go to college. "College students have more money than they used to." While students may benefit from this trend, it may also keep these young adults from growing up — such as looking at relationships as products that can benefit them that don't necessarily require a long-term commitment.

After the 60s and 70s, sex "became an expected experience in dating." Since sexuality has inundated all forms of media, young adults "become familiar with it and lose respect for sex." The guest counsels many young women to wait until they are married, because "a part of you is gone" when a sexual relationship breaks up.

The guest pointed out after an insightful call from a young man that boys and girls approach these relationships differently. Boys are seeking "an opportunity for sex," while girls are looking for true love and a sense of identity.

The guest encourages these teens to know who they are and have a strong sense of self, especially before going off to college. "What's going to be your deal-breaker in relationships?", including if the other person pressures them for sex.
