The Importance of School Choice
On August 8, Dr. Vicki Murray and Evelyn B. Stacey, both from the Pacific Research Institute, joined Phyllis to talk about ways to give parents more educational flexibility. Dr. Murray received her Ph.D. in Politics from the Institute of Philosophic Studies at the University of Dallas, where she was an Earhart Foundation Fellow, and Evelyn has taught at both the elementary and the secondary level.
At the heart of school choice is the fact that "parents, instead of politicians and special interests, are the ones choosing the schools they think are best for their children." Though it’s a simple concept, school choice has stirred up a lot of controversy.
Despite concerns that the public schools are struggling because of a lack of funds, charter schools are run by local independent agencies and "tend to do a better job at a fraction of the cost." Who those agencies are varies from state to state, but "anyone with the interest and a solid plan can open a charter school," whether he is a business owner or an educator.
Parents and students of charter schools usually report higher levels of satisfaction because "if they're not happy, they're free to move — it's not their only option." Reasons that students succeed include higher parental involvement, more innovative curriculum, and the constant threat of parents switching schools, which motivates schools to maintain excellence.
