The Truth about Obamacare
As of September 2010, more than 61% of Americans favor repeal of the misnamed Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act. Guest Sally Pipes, author of The Truth about Obamacare, joined Phyllis on September 25th and confirmed that we have good reasons to oppose this legislation.
In pushing for health care reform, President Obama repeatedly said premiums for the average family would go down $2,500. In contrast, the Congressional Budget Office said those premiums will increase by $2,100, and economists predict between 14 and 110 million people will lose employer-based coverage.
Pipes explained why health care costs are so expensive now: "Government got us into this mess." Between Medicare, Medicaid, the State Children's Health Insurance Plan, and the VA system, fifty percent of healthcare is already in the government's hands, depriving us of the benefits of a free market. Giving preferential tax treatment to employer-paid insurance plans also created market distortions and drove up costs. Additionally, state imposed mandates require insurers to cover things like hair transplants, in-vitro fertilization, and massage therapy in all policies which forces consumers to pay higher premiums for services they don't need.
The solution, said Pipes, is not more government intervention, but creating competitive markets, changing tax laws, tackling fraud and waste, reducing mandates, and reforming malpractice laws.
Pipes described herself as a "refugee" from socialized healthcare in Canada and said that Canadians currently come to the U.S. when denied care. "Where are Americans going to go and where will the best doctors go when Obamcare is fully implemented in 2014?" she asked.
