How To Get a Great College Education
Without Majoring in Debt

The average graduate leaves college with $24,000 in debt. Phyllis spoke with Zac Bissonnette, author of Debt-Free U on February 19th to talk about how to get a great college education without majoring in debt, getting scholarships or "mooching off parents."

Personal finance writer and college senior Zac Bissonnette explained why the people most students turn to for advice on choosing a college — high-school guidance counselors, admissions officers, and financial aid officers — can't be trusted. These folks get paid to make their school look good and to increase enrollment.

While paying for college as you go can seem daunting, Zac explained that most families can realistically do so with some effort and discipline. How? Tuition, fees, room and board at the average four-year public college in America cost $15,500 per year. Most families qualify for a $2,500 tax credit, bringing the real cost down to $13,000. Spreading that cost out over a year works out to about $250 per week. While this is not a small sum, Zac suggested that student work efforts during the school year and during breaks go a long way toward covering those costs. Parents who worry that working and getting good grades are incompatible may be interested to know that the average college student spends a little over 10 hours per week drinking and partying. Trading those 10 hours of partying for a job may even result in better grades.

You can listen to the entire interview and find a link to order Zac's book, Debt-Free U: How I Paid for an Outstanding College Education Without Loans, Scholarships, or Mooching Off My Parents, at EagleForum.org.
