The Flipside of Feminism

Forty years have passed since the so-called women's movement set out to liberate women from the supposed drudgeries of home, husbands and children. So why do surveys show that women who came of age after that movement are less happy than their mothers and grandmothers? On April 2nd, Phyllis and her co-author Suzanne Venker talked about their new book, The Flipside of Feminism: What Conservative Women Know and Men Can't Say.

Women today certainly have more opportunities than ever before, and feminists like to take credit for kicking down doors that were already opened for women. For example, Phyllis graduated from college in 1944, and went to graduate school at Harvard the next year.

Suzanne explained that most women were at home during that era because maintaining a functional home took a great deal of time. It is actually the inventions of men such as dishwashers, clothes washers, dryers, etc. that freed women up to pursue work outside the home.

Radical feminists contend women are victims of an oppressive patriarchy, and are therefore disadvantaged in marriage, motherhood, career, etc. They complain that women are disadvantaged in their careers because taking time off to have kids means they are inevitably behind when they return to work. They even suggest that the government should "compensate" women for staying home to care for their own children!

One thing feminism can claim "credit" for is the increasing fertility problems women face. Under feminist influence, many modern women focus on career without taking into account the biological reality that female fertility declines after age 30. Then they are heartbroken when they can't conceive.
