America the Welfare State

American taxpayers now spend 13 times more on welfare programs than they did in 1964, yet the federal poverty rate remains virtually unchanged. On January 28th edition of Eagle Forum Live, former welfare mom Star Parker explained that current welfare programs will never end poverty because they don't address the root causes.

Ms. Parker compared life on welfare to living on a slave plantation because the rules — don't work, don't save, and don't get married-train people to depend on a central government that controls their housing, food supply, schooling and more. She said public policies that pay people to abort their children or have kids out of wedlock leave families in ruins and destroy entire communities.

The political Left tells the poor they are poor because others are rich, said Parker. She has a different message for those mired in poverty: "God has distributed talents and every one of us can do something with our lives. I'm proof positive of that in America."

According to Parker, the first step out of poverty is understanding that we are responsible to God and others for our choices, including our sexual choices. These are religious values that are best transmitted by the family. She noted that the welfare policies that began with Lyndon Johnson's "Great Society" proved to be a great weapon for waging war on religion and the family in America.
