How Government Employee
Unions are Robbing Us

Phyllis spoke with professor and author Mallory Factor on September 1st about how government employee unions are corrupting politics and bankrupting our nation. (He made it clear that his comments were not directed at private sector unions.)

Many government employees are forced to pay union dues in order to get and keep their jobs. Union bosses admit that they spend only 20-30% of dues on worker representation. Much of the rest of that confiscated money goes to buy off the politicians they will "negotiate" with for pay and benefits. Who is not at the bargaining table? The taxpayers who foot the bill for an expanding government workforce with pay and benefits that greatly exceed that of the average private company worker.

Factor noted that only 7% of private companies are unionized, compared with 41% of government employees. Together, public and private unions collect $14 billion annually in dues. While they talk about protecting the 99%, union officials themselves are on the high end of the top 1% income bracket, with compensation ranging from $300,000 to more than $800,000 in 2010.

Union leaders also enjoy tremendous political influence, especially with the Obama administration. Andy Stern, former head of the SEIU, visited the White House at least 22 times during the first six months of Obama's presidency. AFL-CIO leader Richard Trumka bragged that he visited the White House two or three times a week, and spoke to White House staffers every day of the week, including weekends. Perhaps that isn't surprising considering unions spent more than $300 million to help elect Obama in 2008 and are projected to spend over $400 million to reelect him in 2012.

You can listen to the archived broadcast at EagleForum.org to learn more about government unions and to hear comments and questions from listeners. You can also find a link to Factor's book, Shadowbosses, and read how Obama paid the unions back for their generous support.
