Why Importing Foreign Doctors
and Nurses is a Bad Idea

Healthcare is one of the few bright spots in our economy right now. Even as other sectors lost jobs during the recession, healthcare added 1.2 million high-paying positions. Unfortunately, tens of thousands of Americans were locked out of those jobs in favor of foreign-trained medical workers. On December 8th, Phyllis spoke with Dr. Kate Tulenko about why hospitals are recruiting foreign doctors and nurses and how it impacts patient care.

Dr. Tulenko explained that every year hundreds of thousands of foreigners come to America to take healthcare jobs at the same time equally well-qualified American applicants are turned away from medical schools. The problem is that nursing, physical therapy, pharmacy and medical schools have not increased the number of students they take despite a growing demand for healthcare services in the U.S. Instead of recognizing the need to train more people, the professional associations that regulate these schools have focused on increasing the time required for training. A few decades ago physical therapists only needed a bachelor's degree; the next generation needed a master's degree; now physical therapists must have a Ph.D.

There is no evidence that this credential creep is cost-effective or results in better patient care, according to Dr. Tulenko. Longer, more expensive education requirements mean many people cannot afford the schooling required for medical jobs. The result is a shortage of medical professionals that forces many rural Americans to drive more than an hour to get adequate medical care.

Visit the radio archives page at eagleforum.org to hear more, including how the quality of patient care is impacted by the influx of foreign healthcare workers. You'll also find a link to Dr. Tulenko's book Insourced: How Importing Jobs Impacts the Healthcare Crisis Here and Abroad.
