Liberty on Campus? The Department
of Justice Tramples Free Speech

America's colleges were once home to a vibrant, healthy dating culture. Those days have passed. Last month, Phyllis spoke with professor Christina Hoff Sommers about the dark twist sexual harassment policies have taken on college campuses.

This summer a new letter from the Department of Justice brought sweeping new meaning to the concept of 'sexual harassment,' requiring universities to adopt bizarre judicial procedures biased towards so-called victims of unwelcome speech. Disciplinary measures could potentially be enforced even after an unwelcome request for a date.

Hoff Sommers revealed a government campaign to force schools to punish men without due process. Could American campuses actually become a world where a young woman could report a man for sexual harassment after receiving an unwanted request for a date? American universities have been historic bastions of free speech and public discourse, but this new directive from the Department of Justice threatens the first amendment rights of every U.S. college student. Phyllis and Hoff Sommers reviewed the shocking new campus 'sexual harassment' blueprints, investigating the risks to free speech faced by millions of U.S. citizens on college campuses.

One letter from the Department of Justice requires federally funded schools to abide by quasi-judicial policies biased toward the accusers in sexual harassment disputes. According to Hoff Sommers, these new procedures are immediately binding and even interfere with professors' rights to teach on particular topics, including possibly even certain works of Shakespeare.

Hoff Sommers emphasized the importance of free expression to civilization, addressing the tenuous state of first amendment rights at American colleges and universities.

You can listen to the conversation between Phyllis Schlafly and Christina Hoff Sommers by visiting the radio archives page at EagleForum.org. Hoff Sommers has just revised and updated her controversial classic, The War Against Boys: How Misguided Policies are Harming our Young Men.
