The Good News About Marriage

Men and women today want happy marriages more than ever, but discouragement about marriage is high. Is it possible to have a happy lifelong marriage in the 21st century? In June, researcher Shaunti Feldhahn joined Phyllis Schlafly and Cynthia Davis on air to discuss marriage in America.

It is commonly reported that 50% of all marriages end in divorce, but Feldhahn was quick to point out that this is actually an urban legend. According to the US Census Bureau, 72% of ever-married Americans are still married to their first spouse. The remaining 28% includes the widowed, making the current divorce rate roughly 20-25% for first marriages and 31% for all marriages. While the current divorce rate is higher than it should be, statistics indicate that most marriages last a lifetime.

Until recently, most adults were expected to get married and stay married. Now, people of all ages fear and distrust marriage, afraid that they'll be unhappy. Is this fear valid? Feldhahn's research indicates that 80% of married couples consider their marriage happy. Additionally, unhappy couples who stick with tough marriages are likely to consider themselves happy within 5 years.

"Some people do have a very hard slog of marriage," Feldhahn commented on air. "But the reality is that, most of the time, it's really not rocket science. It is hard work, but in most cases that hard work pays off. We have to be able to lift marriage up again. Most people enjoy marriage: it's a wonderful thing."

Struggling couples today need to know that their marriage is more likely to succeed than to fail. Encouraged by this fact, couples may feel more motivated to invest in their relationship.

Feldhahn aims to offer the good news about marriage in a climate where many people are only aware of the bad news. Her book is titled, The Good News About Marriage: Debunking Discouraging Myths About Marriage and Divorce.
