The Story-Killers: Common Core
and the American Soul

In more than 45 states, Common Core standards now control education in both public and private schools. What are the repercussions? In February, Dr. Terrence Moore joined Phyllis Schlafly to reveal his findings, as published in his new book, The Story-Killers: A Common-Sense Case Against the Common Core.

Adopted in a rush and without the benefit of field tests, Common Core standards already rule the roost in much of American education. Yet in spite of its mandated surge, Dr. Moore argued that Common Core is killing off the greatest American stories and leaving "empty minds and flat hearts" in its wake.

So what do Common Core standards mean for America's heroic stories? One of Dr. Moore's core arguments addresses education and the soul of a child. In the Common Core, literature is demoted in favor of so-called 'informational texts,' submersing students in data while depriving them of soul. According to Dr. Moore, the Common Core tendency towards "complexity without quality" may ultimately undermine the intelligence it attempts to foster in students.

Dr. Moore and Phyllis Schlafly also discussed multiple instances of political and intellectual bias in Common Core literature selections: one text cited describes a sense of liberation experienced by a woman whose loving husband was killed in a tragic accident. Common Core does not stop at public schools, however: because national college-readiness tests are being redrawn to align with Common Core standards, privately schooled students and homeschoolers will be expected to conform to Common Core expectations by high school if not before.

Every great nation is built on great stories. When education is only about standards and tests, there are repercussions for the heroic narratives that build society: they are forgotten. As Dr. Moore and Phyllis Schlafly argue, an education assembly line with no room for heroes is an education assembly line our children must escape.

Dr. Moore is an education reformer, a college professor, a former Marine, and served as founding principal of one of Colorado's best private schools. You can listen to the entire conversation between Phyllis Schlafly and Dr. Moore by visiting the radio archives page at EagleForum.org.
