The War on Humans

King Cove is a remote Alaska fishing village, inaccessible even by air one-third of the year. The community's 30-year campaign for permission to build a gravel lane through federal land to the nearest all-weather airport came to a screeching halt in December when U.S. Secretary of the Interior Sally Jewell paid a visit and denied the request.

"I've listened to your stories: now I have to listen to the animals," Jewell told the residents of King Cove, citing theoretical environmental impact from the proposed road.

This in spite of the fact that King Cove offered the federal government 56,000 acres in exchange for the 11-mile one-lane gravel track they hoped to create. According to locals, 19 people in the community have died during medical emergencies since 1980 as a result of inability to access a hospital during extreme weather.

A growing number of activists dream of slashing the human population and granting legal rights to animals, plants, and the earth itself. On April 26, bioethicist Wesley Smith joined Phyllis Schlafly on Eagle Forum Live to make the case for human dignity.

Smith has coined the phrase 'human exceptionalism' in defense of the idea that human life is legally and morally superior to animal and plant life. Smith recently released "The War on Humans," a documentary and audiobook which outlines the pernicious repercussions of placing animal and plant life on par with human existence.

In Switzerland, it's illegal to flush a live goldfish down the toilet, and a new clause in the Swiss Constitution aims to defend "the individual dignity of plants." Meanwhile in Belgium, child euthanasia is protected by law.

"Propaganda loses its power once you are able to see the man behind the curtain," Smith reminded listeners. ". . . they can only prevail if the majority of people remain complacent or indifferent or unbelieving."

"We are the only moral agents in the known universe," Smith commented of humans. "We have a duty to treat animals properly and humanely, we have a duty to stewardship, to proper environmental practices, and only we have this duty. . . . If being human, in and of itself, is not what gives us the obligation to treat animals properly and humanely, what does?"
