A leading supporter of traditional marriage called on the chairman of the Republican National Committee Wednesday to reiterate the party’s opposition to gay marriage.
Phyllis Schlafly, president of the Eagle Forum, urged RNC president Reince Priebus to reinforce the party’s commitment to the 2012 Republican Party Platform, which endorsed traditional marriage.
“We expect all Republican officials to support the platform. The endorsement of same- sex marriage is not acceptable,” Mrs. Schlafly wrote in a letter to Mr. Preibus.
The letter comes after more than 80 high-profile Republicans — most of whom are no longer in office — signed a legal brief in support of the constitutional challenge of California’s Proposition 8 which defines marriage as between a man and a woman.
Proposition 8 banned same-sex marriage in California, and the Supreme Court is scheduled to hear the arguments on March 26.
