Phyllis Schlafly with Oklahoma Teen Eagles.
|
Saturday, May 8th, more than 250 political activists attended a breakfast sponsored by Oklahoma Eagle Forum. We gathered at the Meridian Convention Center in Oklahoma City to hear founder and president of Eagle Forum, Phyllis Schlafly, as she addressed the room full of mostly Oklahoma Republican Party Convention attendees.
Oklahoma Teen Eagles and their parents also participated in the breakfast. The Teen Eagles were recognized and presented to the attendees which included many public officials. U.S. Senator Jim Inhofe, U.S. Congressman Ernest Istook, , quite a few state senators and representatives as well as many leaders in the pro-family community were present. Teen Eagles Michelle McCoy and Emoly West led the audience in singing the national anthem. Emoly was recognized and congratulated as the recipient of the 11th Annual Eagle Forum Collegian Summit scholarship. The Summit will be held in Washington, D.C., June 10th through the 12th.
After breakfast, the Teen Eagles had the rare privilege of some private time with Mrs. Schlafly. We spent about an hour and a half visiting with her, asking questions about everything from her personal history to her vision for the Teen Eagles. She shared her hopes about how this fine group of young people will impact the world.
One very interesting and surprising bit of trivia we learned about our elegant, demure, and especially anti-feminist founder was how she put herself through college while working as a munitions tester during World War II. What a wonderful irony that the foremost leader of the pro-family, anti-feminist movement would work her way to a law degree shooting guns and blowing things up! It goes without saying (but I'll say it anyway), this group of young people, whose generation has cut their teeth on first person shooter video games, was very impressed!
Now that we've gotten to know Mrs. Schlafly better, it's much easier to understand how she has successfully led many very important pro-family battles through the years. She's tough, funny, interesting, and has a mind like a steel trap; but somehow still manages to exude an aura of elegant femininity. She wasn't what many of us expected ~ she is even better, and we are all very proud to call her our leader!
Our personal interview time with Mrs. Schlafly ended too soon and we adjourned for a brief photo-session. Our thanks goes to Mrs. Bunny Chambers, President of Oklahoma Eagle Forum, for providing this wonderful opportunity. We will never forget the time we spent with Mrs. Schlafly!
