Kansas: Please Exit the Common Core Now!

Kansas: Please Exit the Common Core Now!

January 13, 2014

STOP Common CoreIn 2010, the Kansas Board of Education was enticed by the federal government to adopt the national K-12 Common Core standards in English and math in order to compete with other states for funding in a federal grant competition called Race to the Top. Although Kansas did not even win funding, we are being still forced to implement the Common Core in our classrooms.

Across the nation, a groundswell of opposition is rising up to remove the Common Core from schools. The standards are of poor quality and fail to prepare American students for studies in science, technology, engineering, and math. By eighth grade, the standards put our students two years behind their peers in high-performing countries and even further behind in high school.

In English language arts, the Common Core severely de-emphasizes the study of classic literature and instead implements drab and simplistic “informational” texts. We know that critical thinking is the key to success, and the evidence shows that children should be reading more, not less, classic literature. More than that, child psychiatrists and psychologists have heavily criticized the Standards as being age-inappropriate for young children.

Although our efforts to defund Common Core in the last legislative session were unsuccessful, we have not given up. Kansas must reclaim its authority over education NOW! Kansas must get out of the Common Core initiative and develop world-class standards that are good for Kansas and under Kansan control.

Common Core is nothing less than the nationalization of education, and we know that when the government takes over, not much is done well. No Child Left Behind is leaving children behind; the Affordable Care Act is making healthcare unaffordable; and the Common Core is destroying the core of the American education system.

But, there is hope!! Your legislators need to hear from you! You must help us defend the Kansas and U.S. Constitutions, parental rights, and push back against federal expansion.

The Kansas State House and Senate can do this with the passage of a simple law. But, your legislators need to know that this is an important issue to you and your family.

TAKE ACTION!

Please call the President of the Senate, Senator Susan Wagle (785-296-2419) and the Speaker of the House, Representative Ray Merrick (785-296-2302) and respectfully tell them to lead Kansas out of the Common Core THIS session not next year or the year after, but this year. The futures of our children are at stake.

Then, use the talking points below to let your personal state legislators know that you are depending on them to make your voice heard!

Please remove the Common Core State Standards Initiative!

We are writing to urge you to please take action on Common Core this session. We don’t have time to wait until next year or the year after to reform education.

The Common Core is a big-government, top-down approach to education. It is not good for students or the future of Kansas.

The Common Core Standards are of poor quality and will fail to prepare our students for studies in science, technology, engineering, and math. By eighth grade, the standards put our students two years behind their peers in high-performing countries and even further behind in high school.

In English language arts, the Common Core severely de-emphasizes the study of classic literature and instead implements drab and simplistic “informational” texts. We know that critical thinking is the key to success. The evidence shows that children should be reading more, not less, classic literature.

Child psychiatrists and psychologists have heavily criticized the Standards as being age-inappropriate for young children.

With costs expected to rise well above $100 million for states, Kansas taxpayers cannot afford the Common Core!

We know that Kansans cannot depend on the federal government to look out for the best interests of our children, so please defend Kansans by removing us from the Common Core State Standards Initiative during this legislative session!
